The Best New Years Resolution Ever

New Years is a time when people seem to feel the need to make resolutions about what they will do in the future. A lot of the time people fail to keep those resolutions... most likely because they made them for the wrong reason.

I used to make New Years Resolutions and I ALWAYS failed to keep them.

Then, on New Years Eve of 1980 I made the BEST New Years resolution ever.

I HAVE NEVER BROKEN IT IN 31 YEARS!

YOU can do it too!

It's very simple. This is all you have to do:

"I Resolve to never again make any New Years Resolutions"

It will be the easiest New Years promise to keep that you'll ever make

Because it will be the LAST one you ever make.

Have a safe & happy 2011 folks

(and you're welcome)

Slivers Of Steven

Slivers of Steven

When streetlights urge the lunar moth
to wish upon a star
You smash against your eyelids
Like a hornet in a jar

Ambulance screaming muted
Racing to the scene
Of a five dragon pile-up
In a young child's dream

You sweat the blood of sinners
And babies underfed
Where Madonna's "like a Virgin"
Burned a hole through your head

The lights are on but no one's home
God pushed you down the stairs
You're empty faced and glassy-eyed
Gasping still for air

Abandoned like a family secret
No one wants to claim
Time and freedom slipped away
Pain and scars remain

Like dewdrops on a spider web
The drool on your chin
Reflects a ray of golden light
Into shadows deep within

Darkest corners of your mind
Dragons yet run wild
Burning monarch butterflies
To enslave your inner child

You will never leave the garden
To kneel at Heaven's gate
To live and die a thousand times
Each day remains your fate

Flowers and Flower Quotes 01

I like flowers and I like how thoughts bloom in the mind. Here are some pics I've shot with 'blooms' others have thought.(You can see enlarged images of the photos by cli cking on them with your mouse.)

When at last I took the time to look into the heart
of a flower, it opened up a whole new world; a world
where every country walk would be an adventure,
where every garden would become an enchanted one.
- Princess Grace of Monaco

There is material enough in a single flower
for the ornament of a score of cathedrals.
- John Ruskin

Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they neither toil nor spin;
yet I tell you,
even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these.
- Bible, Matthew, 6:28-29

Art is the unceasing effort to compete with the beauty of flowers
and never succeeding.
- Marc Chagall

Do We Cut Trees Down Because They Bow To The Wind And Not Us?

That title quote is mine. All that follow are not. This entry is about some trees I've had the joy of seeing.

I think that I shall never see
A poem lovely as a tree.
A tree whose hungry mouth is prest
Against the earth's sweet flowing breast;
A tree that looks at God all day
And lifts her leafy arms to pray;
A tree that may in Summer wear
A nest of robins in her hair;
Upon whose bosom snow has lain;
Who intimately lives with rain.
Poems are made by fools like me,
But only God can make a tree.
~Joyce Kilmer, "Trees," 1914

The tree which moves some to tears of joy is in the eyes of others only a green thing which stands in their way. ~William Blake

And this, our life, exempt from public haunt, finds tongues in trees, books in the running brooks, sermons in stones, and good in everything. ~William Shakespeare

Alone with myself
The trees bend to caress me
The shade hugs my heart.
~Candy Polgar

Only when the last tree has died and the last river been poisoned and the last fish been caught will we realise we cannot eat money. ~Cree Indian Proverb

All religions, arts and sciences are branches of the same tree.
~ Albert Einstein

Man You Factor Holidays

Boxing Day, 2010.

Boxing Day... the day after Christmas. Even when I did celebrate what most (white) Canadians call Christmas I was never sure what Boxing Day was about or how it fit into the religious angle most of the other consumerist debauchery was decorated with to make it somehow ok spiritually. (Like, greed is ok if it's greed in the name of Baby Jesus. Or something.) If Christmas celebrates drinking... I mean, the birth of Christ... Not that it does but way back the church needed a special day (like a sale) for the pagans to party. How else to get those heathens into the "sphere of their control" (Read: God) and make good Christians out of them? It just so happened that Dec 25th was a day the pagans already celebrated with much debauchery and joy so it was a convenient date to make Christ's birthday party.

But where does Boxing Day fit in?

It seems to be all about SHOPPING!!!!

I don't understand that.

I don't understand a lot.

This blog will soon demonstrate that clearly enough.

I'm Gordon Gustav and you are not.
